Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
