Whenever a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
