Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
