A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
