British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
